Strategic Interim Executive Director FAQ
What exactly does an interim executive director do?
An interim leader steps in to manage daily operations, stabilize the team, and pave the way for a new Director. Unlike a permanent hire, I "hold the fort" and focus specifically on fixing structural issues so the next leader starts on solid ground.
How is your pricing structured for smaller nonprofits?
I use a base monthly retainer to cover core continuity in every engagement, based on the size of your agency and the complexity of operations. Mapped structural projects are scoped separately, on the basis of their complexity, and offered as flat fees, giving your Board full budget control.
How long do these interim engagements typically last?
Most transitions take 4 to 9 months. The first 30 days are diagnostic, followed by a stabilization period. We adjust the timeline based on your search for a permanent successor.
Do you help with the search for a new Executive Director?
I don't act as a search firm, but I prepare the organization to be 'hire-ready.' I ensure your finances are assessed, and policies are in order so you attract high-quality candidates who want to hit the ground running.
What is the 'Stabilization Map' delivered on Day 30?
It is a detailed report mapping your organizational health. It identifies hidden liabilities in HR, finance, or compliance and gives the Board a clear list of priorities for the rest of the transition.
Why do you charge extra for Mapped Priority Projects?
Small-to-midsize nonprofits have wildly varying infrastructure needs. One organization might have flawless bookkeeping but a fractured staff culture; another might have a thriving team but years of co-mingled restricted grant funding. By separating baseline management from project-based repairs, your Board never pays a bloated corporate rate for a simple holding pattern. You only invest in the specific, high-level remediation your unique situation demands.
What happens if the Board chooses not to greenlight any Mapped items?
Nothing changes regarding your baseline stability. I will continue to execute your Base Operations flawlessly, keep your staff aligned, and manage your expenses through cyclic revenue. Your Map simply remains a highly valuable diagnostic tool that you can hand directly to your incoming permanent Executive Director on Day 1 so they can hit the ground running.
How are the additional projects priced?
If the Board selects items from the Day 30 Map for me to fix, we will sign a simple, single-page Change Order. Each project is assigned a transparent, flat fee or a temporarily adjusted monthly professional rate. There are never any surprise hourly invoices or hidden charges.
How many additional projects can the Board choose?
Estimated times to complete the projects will be included as part of the Day 30 Map. What I can effectively accomplish will depend on a variety of things, including the size of the project and the length of time the Board wishes to retain me as an Interim Director.
What if the Board hires a new Executive Director before the Map item is complete?
After I complete the full transfer to your new Director (congratulations!), I will complete the Map items per the Change Order the Board agreed to, at the prices agreed to.
